Ohio Edison Presents “Gifts of the Season” to Local Charities

Akron, Ohio, December 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Ohio Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), presented a surprise $5,000 “Gifts of the Season” to two local non-profit organizations that strive to improve the lives of the communities they serve. The gifts were presented on behalf of the FirstEnergy Foundation as part of its annual “Gifts of the Season” holiday campaign.

This year’s gift recipients are Miriam House in norwalk, Huron Countyand the North Center in Lorain, County of Lorain – two organizations that provide support services to underserved and vulnerable people of all ages within their communities.

“We are proud to support these organizations so that they can continue to provide services to help those facing unexpected challenges during these uncertain times,” said Lorna Wisham, President of the FirstEnergy Foundation. “Winners were chosen secretly by FirstEnergy External Affairs employees who identified organizations in their area that are doing extraordinary work to strengthen the community and improve the lives of vulnerable and underserved people.”

Miriam House provides transitional housing for homeless women and their children, with the aim of helping them to rebuild their lives and develop the skills needed to regain autonomy in order to obtain stable and independent housing. Last year, 10 female-headed households were temporarily housed at Miriam House, and half of them were moved to permanent accommodation within a year.

“The generous funds provided by the FirstEnergy Foundation will allow us to continue to help women and their children overcome homelessness,” said Rodney Schustergeneral manager of Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo who oversees the ministry of Miriam House. “These funds are coming in a time of need because many single mothers are in a situation they never thought they would be in during this pandemic, and they are coming to us asking for help.”

The North Center offers comprehensive behavioral health services to children, adolescents and adults in the greater County of Lorain region, as well as crisis and sexual assault emergency services 24/7/365.

“We are grateful to have received this donation from the FirstEnergy Foundation, as funding for mental health and addictions services is increasingly critical during these difficult economic times, as the number of people who need help continues to rise,” said Don SchiffbauerNorth Center General Manager.
